Dr. Daniel Sheard is a Scientist with a first class honours degree in Natural Sciences (Chemistry, Physics and Biology) and a doctorate in Physics from Cambridge University.  He also has a master's degree in microbiology from the University of London.  Daniel joined Jarrett Kirman in 1996 and became a partner of Brookes Bell Jarrett Kirman in 2001.  Prior to this, he had six years' experience teaching at Christ's College, Cambridge and at Eton College.  Daniel has attended on a wide variety of vessel types to investigate cargo problems and has given opinions on the scientific aspects of numerous marine cargo claims involving a variety of commodities including grain, oilseeds, refrigerated fruit and vegetables, fertilisers, minerals and chemicals.  He regularly acts as expert witness in arbitration and court hearings.

Dr. Martin Jonas, a German-born Scientist with a first class Diplom degree from the University of Cologne and a doctorate in Physics from Cambridge University, joined Jarrett Kirman in 1998 and became a partner in 2003. Prior to this, he worked for the German government for 3 years, and carried out academic research at Cambridge University for 5 years. His scientific and surveying expertise concerns the ocean carriage and storage of a wide variety of commodities; grain, oilseeds, derived agricultural products, sugar, fertilisers, liquid cargoes, minerals, chemicals, fruit and vegetables, etc. He has dealt extensively with problems arising from the potential liquefaction of mineral ore concentrates. Martin has attended on board a wide variety of vessel types to carry out investigations into the cause and extent of cargo deterioration, cargo fires and other marine claims and has acted as expert witness at arbitrations and court proceedings in a number of jurisdictions.

Dr. Nicholas Crouch, a Scientist with a first class honours degree in Chemistry from London University and a doctorate in Organic Chemistry from Oxford University, joined Brookes Bell Jarrett Kirman in 1999 and became a partner in 2004.  Prior to joining, Nick spent many years at Oxford, initially as a Junior Research Fellow, then as a Stipendiary Lecturer in Organic Chemistry followed by a full Tutorial Fellowship at Oriel College. His academic expertise centres on chemistry and biochemistry and he has experience in microbiology, molecular biology and analytical chemistry techniques.  He also has first hand experience of dealing with chemical incidents and fires and has acted as an expert in three major pharmaceutical patent lawsuits in the U.S.A.   He has also acted as an expert witness in arbitration.  His work involves investigating and giving opinions on scientific and technical aspects of marine cargo claims worldwide, such as grain, fruit, sulphur and fertilisers.

Dr. Kai Aamlid, born in Norway, is a Science graduate with a Master's degree and doctorate in Sugar Chemistry from London University. He had an Overseas Research Student Award and a Fellowship in the European Science Exchange Programme awarded by the Royal Society.  He joined Jarrett Kirman in 1989 and became a partner in 1993. Prior to this he was Manager of a timber estate and did post-doctoral biotechnological research at King's College, London.  Since joining Jarrett Kirman, he has worked on a wide variety of vessel types, investigating an extensive range of bulk and packaged cargoes, including foodstuffs, ore and minerals.  He has conducted major investigations into serious over-heating of DRI as well as cargo fires on container ships.  He has acted as expert witness in arbitration hearings.

Alan Smaridge is a chemistry graduate and a Chartered Chemist. He gained experience of a wide range of commodities including essential oil, soaps, detergents and aerosol propellant before moving into the petroleum business as a laboratory chemist, analysing an extensive range of petroleum products and chemicals. He became a chemist inspector both in the U.K. and overseas, gaining a wide knowledge of sampling, inspection and measurement procedures. Alan joined Brookes Bell in 2009 and applies his experience to disputes involving the loading and discharge of a diverse range of cargoes carried by road, rail and sea, varying from crude oil, finished petroleum products, especially multi-grade shipments, vegetable oil, and through to sophisticated pharmaceuticals. Alan has undertaken numerous joint analyses and is experienced in conducting field surveys aboard tankers, at refineries and storage installations worldwide. He has special experience in the chemistry of bunker fuel and bunker quality disputes having served on Institute of Petroleum committees on flammability and general tests concerning fuels and light distillates. Alan is an experienced expert witness and has prepared many reports and technical papers for use in arbitrations and High Court proceedings.

Dr. Tim Moss, a Scientist with an Honours degree in Biochemistry, a Master's degree in Toxicology and a doctorate in Environmental and Occupational Medicine, joined Brookes Bell Jarrett Kirman in early 2000 and became a partner in 2006.  Prior to this, he worked for several years as a Study Director in the Agrochemical industry and has worked in the brewing industry.  He has specific expertise in assessing the safety and other properties of chemicals and has broad experience of agricultural products.  His work involves the investigation of cargo damage, contamination and tainting on a variety of cargoes, including grains, oil seeds, meals, sugar, chemicals, fruit, etc.  He has provided scientific and technical opinions on marine, road, rail and air cargo.  Tim's work has led to him acting as an expert witness in a number of court hearings.

Dr Ken Wildey joined Brookes Bell as a Consultant in 2009, with a focus on infestations in plant-based cargoes.   He has a PhD in Entomology from Reading University and specialises in insect and mite problems in foodstuffs and animal feeds, as well as water and heat damage, moulds, mycotoxins, and other contaminant issues.  His particular interest is in a forensic approach to determining sources of infestation and related timings of development. Ken’s strong practical experience in insecticide applications, including fumigations, has led to his involvement as an expert witness in arbitrations and court proceedings on a range of issues worldwide, including disputes under Food Aid Programmes.  He has also been consulted by Government Departments and Trade Bodies on Phytosanitary matters, and is experienced in International sampling standards and pest detection methods.

Professor Nick Price joined Brookes Bell as a Consultant in 2009, with a focus on information mining and data evaluation.   He has a PhD in Biological Chemistry from the University of Lancaster, and is a visiting Professor of Applied Biology at the University of Leeds and an honorary Fellow in Chemistry at the University of York.  His subject specialities include fumigant and insecticide chemistry and biochemistry, natural product chemistry, risk assessment of chemicals, and computer models for toxicology especially QSAR.
