Bronwen is a Fuel Chemist at Brookes Bell, known for her expertise in fuel analysis and laboratory management since joining in 2022. As a member of the bunker team, she attends laboratories worldwide to oversee the testing of fuel samples in line with ISO 8217 standards, alongside more in-depth analyses for fuel characterisation and contaminant identification using advanced analytical techniques. Her involvement extends to handling cases and analyses of petroleum and liquid chemical cargoes, including joint sampling exercises.


 


Background

After gaining of a Master's Degree in Chemistry with Honours and Industrial Experience, Bronwen embarked on a year of postgraduate research.  She then moved into industry, working in investigative analytical laboratories utilising a range of both organic and inorganic analytical techniques for environmental, food, materials, DNA, and petroleum products.  Bronwen was the lead analyst in multiple research initiatives, which included the development of DNA tags for bunker fuels and novel hydrocarbon exploration methods.

Bronwen is experienced in laboratory management, quality management and the development of ISO 17025 Quality Management systems, culminating in UKAS accreditation. Her expertise extends to laboratory design, build and fit-out, instrument installation, validation and method development.

Fuel and Analytical Chemistry Technical Lead – The Lab at Brookes Bell, Birkenhead

Involved in the initiation and development of an investigative marine fuel laboratory.  Sourced, installed, validated, and maintained laboratory equipment and instrumentation.  Achieved ISO/IEC 17025:2017 UKAS accreditation within a year, acting as quality manager alongside technical lead role.  Interviewed, managed, and trained a team of analysts.  Developed tailored analytical methods.  Engaged in R&D to address industry-specific needs.

Analyst – Minton Treharne and Davies Limited, Cardiff

Worked across a diverse array of laboratories which included petroleum, instrumentational, environmental, food, materials, and DNA analysis.  Utilising wet chemistry techniques as well as a number of inorganic and organic instrumentational analytical techniques, including, but not limited to, GC-MS, GCGC-MS, FT-IR, ICP-OES/MS, HPLC, SEM-EDX, DSC and TGA.

Specialised in oil and petroleum product analysis, participating in witnessed joint analyses.  Conducted investigative work for diverse clients, leading to outcomes in legal and insurance domains.  Developed in-house methodologies and techniques across varying laboratories. Towards the end of her tenure, her main focus was method development for the detection and characterisation of contaminants in bunker fuels.  Instructed on the company's Petroleum Courses, showcasing strong communication skills.  Participated in multiple research projects, including DNA tag design and novel hydrocarbon exploration techniques.

Postgraduate Researcher – Kingston University, London

Conducted research on biologically active compounds in matrices using novel techniques in Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy – Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (DOSY-NMR).  Regularly presented findings to stakeholders, including GSK representatives.  Supervised and assisted undergraduate and postgraduate students in the lab.
