Greater push for seafarer safety as Brookes Bell attends Safety@Sea 2025

Hisyam Haron, a Master Mariner in our Singapore office, recently attended the International Safety@Sea Conference, a flagship event organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) that champions a stronger safety culture and greater collaboration across the maritime industry.

The conference drew industry leaders, regulators, and maritime professionals from around the globe for two days of dynamic discussion. The agenda tackled some of the sector’s most pressing challenges, from resilience and decarbonisation to digitalisation, all underpinned by a shared message: people must remain at the heart of safety.

Reflecting on his experience, Hisyam said “The push for safety feels stronger than ever. Safety is no longer just a regulatory checkbox; it’s a mindset and a culture that must evolve with the maritime industry.”

He noted how the sector is learning from past incidents, working to minimise distractions, increase transparency in reporting, and prioritise seafarer competency and wellbeing in the face of commercial pressures, technological change, and the ongoing “green wave” of environmental regulation.

With a strong presence in Singapore and close ties to the Asia-Pacific maritime community, Brookes Bell remains deeply committed to supporting safe, efficient operations worldwide through its technical consultancy, forensic investigation, and risk mitigation services in one of the world’s leading maritime hubs.
