We're delighted to share Captain Ali’s story, as this month marks the 50th anniversary of his career in the maritime industry. Beginning his journey in 1975, Syed’s story is one of hard work, passion, and a deep love for life at sea.
Starting out as an apprentice, Captain Ali steadily worked his way up through every rank, gaining real hands-on experience on a wide variety of vessels during his 32 years of seagoing experience. From cargo ships and bulk carriers to container ships, cattle carriers, and tankers, his work culminated in the roles of Chief Officer and Master on Aframax Crude Oil Carriers before moving ashore in 2007. His early years at sea built a strong foundation in ship management, safety, and the daily challenges of operating a vessel.
Today, Captain Ali is a Master Mariner whose credentials speak volumes. He holds a Certificate of Competency as Master (Unlimited, Foreign Going) from the UK and carries a Dangerous Cargo Endorsement. His expertise covers everything from steel and draft surveys to container, bunker, water depth, and chemical tanker surveys. Along the way, he’s also trained as a Ship’s Security Officer, earned his GMDSS certification, mastered Advanced Firefighting, learned Navigation Control Console operations, and even completed an Advanced Training Program on Oil Tankers. These achievements show not only his skill but also his commitment to staying ahead in an ever-evolving industry.
In 2007, Syed transitioned from life at sea to a new role as a maritime consultant and surveyor with companies like G.K. Vallatos and Associates and INC Nautical, and since 2010 he’s been with Brookes Bell as part of our 3D MARINE team in Houston.
During his time the USA, his expertise has been key in solving complex cargo issues, whether it’s handling cargo discrepancies, performing structural damage surveys, or investigating insurance claims. His hands-on approach has helped him tackle everything from surge incidents and collisions to groundings and pollution cases with steady professionalism.
Captain Ali’s career isn’t just about personal achievement; it’s a reflection of the incredible changes in maritime operations over the years. His journey mirrors the shift from traditional seafaring to today’s high-tech marine surveying and consultancy. His focus on safety, continuous learning, and excellence is a testament to his character.
“I began my journey in 1975 from a humble home, where my parents taught me and my siblings the power of consistency and hard work. Early on, I was blessed to marry my wife Zareen, whose steadfast support saw me through every challenge. Together, we’ve built a loving family, four children and eight grandchildren, whose laughter reminds me of what truly matters. Reflecting on my career and the lessons learned, I remain grateful for my roots and the people who have shaped my path,” says Captain Ali.
As the maritime industry continues to evolve, Syed’s legacy stands as a roadmap for future generations. His story reminds us that with passion, resilience, and a willingness to learn, the possibilities are endless. Today, his journey inspires colleagues and newcomers alike, proving that the spirit of adventure and commitment to excellence is at the very heart of our industry.
Join us in thanking Captain Ali and celebrating his 50 years of service!
