Simon is a Chartered Naval Architect, with extensive experience is the design and analysis of ships and marine structures. He has practical experience of working in a repair shipyard and onboard ships, to combine with his technical analysis skills.

Background

He has attended damage surveys and wreck removal operations on behalf of H&M Insurers and P&I Clubs, as well as providing technical advice to national authorities during active salvage cases. He has experience in preparing expert opinion advice on naval architecture issues and has given oral evidence at London Arbitration. Simon has provided design consultancy services to ship owners, shipyards and designers, covering stability analysis, structural design and safety engineering for newbuild projects as well as modifications to existing vessels. This includes preparing documentation for submission to Class and Flag for approval. He has completed structural analyses using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to assess ship designs against regulatory requirements and also to determine failure mechanisms for marine claims.

Leading the naval architecture department, providing a wide range of expertise to Owners, Operators, Insurers and Other Interests.

ABL London, Principal/ Senior Naval Architect
Prepared causation reports, assessing the root causes of marine failures and casualties involving ships, floating drydocks and shifting cargo. Provided expert naval architecture advice on statutory and classification rules for sale and purchase disputes. Attended collision and fire related casualties on behalf of Owners, P&I Club and Insurers.

Conducted condition surveys on a drill ship and FSPO, and marine warranty surveys for transportation of project cargo and towage operations.

General naval architecture consultancy services to ship owners, operators and ports. Covering areas of ship stability, structural design, regulatory compliance and mooring assessments.
 

Brookes Bell, Senior Naval Architect
Provided naval architecture consultancy for stability upgrades to Ro-Pax passenger vessels, including conducting incline experiments and attending model tests, as well as designing structural modifications and completed regulation GAP reviews.

Conducted detailed engineering analyses in support of marine claims and disputes, including preparing expert opinion reports. Completed damage and condition surveys on behalf of Owners, Charterers and Insurers.

Technical assessments for salvage and wreck removal projects, at both the tender assessment phase and during operations. Also attended on site at critical times to provide assistance, on behalf of P&I clubs and insurers.

Completed a graduate scheme, experiencing the different working areas of a ship repair yard. Primarily engaged with providing engineering support for the docking and repairs/ upgrades of Royal Navy ships. Also spent time in the fabrication division and assisting a Lloyd’s Register surveyor.
