French shipping giant CMA CGM is set to invest €100m in Mistral AI over the next five years to develop and deploy bespoke AI solutions to support its operations both on land and at sea.
As part of the agreement, a dedicated team of Mistral AI’s artificial intelligence specialists will be based at CMA CGM’s headquarters in Marseille. An additional team will also be based at Grand Central, Marseille - the headquarters of CMA Media (the group’s media division).
Working hand-in-hand with CMA CGM’s own tech experts, the first Mistral AI team will deploy and scale AI solutions across CMA’s international shipping and logistics operations. The second team will be ‘pioneering new forms of media innovation’.
The two teams to be established are:
The Mistral AI Factory will focus on streamlining and personalising the customer experience, implementing initiatives such as automated claims processing, intelligent e-commerce tools, and advanced document management platforms.
The AI Media Lab will be collaborating with journalists and media experts to develop intelligent content management systems, and an innovative fact-checking system.
Commenting on the partnership and investment, the chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group, Rodolphe Saadé, said:
“This partnership with Mistral AI marks a decisive step in the transformation of CMA CGM through artificial intelligence. Together, we will develop tailored solutions to reinvent our businesses, from maritime transport to logistics and media, with tangible benefits for our customers and our employees.
With Mistral AI, we are choosing a French technology leader that combines excellence, digital sovereignty, and a strong sense of responsibility, to build an artificial intelligence that serves both our performance and our values”.
Saadé’s comments were echoed by Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI, who said:
“CMA CGM’s commitment to transforming all its activities through generative AI underscores both the Group’s ambition and strategic vision. Our partnership is intended to serve as a model for how AI can be structurally embedded within organisations to enhance Europe’s competitive edge. We are honoured by the trust Rodolphe Saadé has placed in our company, our models, and our ability to support this transformation”.
The partnership with Mistral AI is the latest in a series of AI investments that CMA CGM has committed to.
Under the leadership of Saadé, CMA CGM has cumulatively committed €500m to AI, forging partnerships with Google and Perplexity and investing companies such as PoolSide and Dataiku.
According to the company’s latest plans, CMA CGM centres its AI strategy around three key pillars: equipping employees with tailored AI-driven tools, offering an AI-optimised customer experience, and transforming its core activities with AI.
